Auschwitz
The concentration camp in Oświęcim ( the Nazis changed the name of the town to Auschwitz) was established by Nazis in 1940.
At first, Poles were imprisoned and killed here, then people from 28 countries of Europe.
In 1942 the camp became a site of the mass extermination of Jews. The concentration camp in Auschwitz, with its gas chambers and crematorias, became a symbol of an enormous drama of human beings.
After the war the camp was turned into museum and listed at UNESCO World Heritage List. The aim of the museum is to commemorate all the victims and to appeal for respect for basic human values: freedom, right to life and dignity
