The paths of John Paul II

Our Pope John Paul II repeatedly emphasised His personal attitude to Krakow. He came here to study Polish philology at Jagiellonian University, then lived in Krakow as a worker (during the World War II), priest, bishop and archbishop. He visited Krakow seven times as a Pope - people living here will always remember these moving meetings.

  • I would like to invite you to visit the sites beloved by John Paul II:
  • 1.The Palace of Krakow Bishops, where He lived as Archbishop of Krakow.
  • 2.The favourite church of John Paul II - the Basilica of Franciscan Fathers.
  • 3.The Seminary of Krakow Archdiocese.
  • 4.The houses on Kanonicza Street, where He lived as a bishop.
  • 5.The Cathedral on Wawel Hill, where He celebrated His first Mass in 1946, where He was consecrated as a bishop in 1958 and which He visited repeatedly as the Pope.
  • 6.The church of St. Michael the Archangel and St. Stanislaus, where the Pope met with students and representatives of cultural and scientific communities during his first pilgrimage to Poland in 1979.
  • 7.The Papal Stone on Błonia, where the Masses with John Paul II were organised.
  • 8.The Jagiellonian University, where He studied.
  • 9.St. Mary`s church on the Main Square.
  • 10.The tomb of the parents of John Paul II on Rakowice Cementary.
  • 11.Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Łagiewniki.
